10e internationale ‘Clay Conference’ komt er aan

In het voorjaar van 2027 organiseren NIRAS, de Belgische organisatie voor radioactief afval, en COVRA samen de 10e internationale ‘Clay Conference’. De focus van deze conferentie ligt op het gebruik van klei als natuurlijke en kunstmatige barrière voor de geologische opslag eindberging van radioactief afval. Klei wordt beschouwd als geschikt gastgesteente voor een eindbergingsfaciliteit. In een eindberging werken een reeks natuurlijke en kunstmatige barrières samen om radioactief afval te isoleren en de radionucliden voor een hele lange termijn in te sluiten.

Om het vertrouwen in de veiligheid op lange termijn te vergroten, zijn multidisciplinaire benaderingen nodig om de kleibarrières en hun insluitingseigenschappen gedetailleerd te karakteriseren. Maar ook om het gedrag van de verschillende barrières in de loop der tijd te kunnen beoordelen. Tijdens de conferentie wordt de nadruk gelegd op implementatiegerichte onderwerpen die de voortgang van de internationale onderzoeksprojecten weerspiegelen.

Deze tiende editie van de ‘Clay Conference’ vindt plaats van 4 tot 9 april 2027 in het inspirerende congrescentrum A Room with a Zoo, een uitzonderlijke locatie in het hart van de dierentuin van Antwerpen.

Ook een bezoek aan HADES, het Belgische ondergrondse onderzoekslaboratorium, en een bezoek aan de bovengrondse opslagfaciliteiten van COVRA behoren tot de mogelijkheden.

Register now for the 10th International Clay Conference

In the spring of 2027 NIRAS, the Belgian organization for radioactive waste, and the Dutch counterpart COVRA are jointly organizing the 10th international Clay Conference. The focus of this conference is on the use of clay as a natural and artificial barrier for the geological disposal of radioactive waste. Clay is considered a suitable host rock for a disposal facility. In a site, a series of natural and artificial barriers work together to isolate the waste and contain the radionuclides for a very long term.

To increase confidence in long-term safety, multidisciplinary approaches are needed to characterize the clay barriers and their containment properties in detail, as well as to assess the behavior of the various barriers over time. During the conference, the emphasis will be placed on implementation-oriented topics that reflect the progress of international research projects.

This tenth edition of the Clay Conference will take place from April 4 to 9, 2027, at the inspiring conference center A Room with a Zoo, an exceptional location in the heart of the Antwerp Zoo.
