Radioactive waste

Because radioactive materials emit radiation, eventually they lose their radioactivity and no longer pose a danger. This process is called decay. For high-level radioactive waste this can take over one hundred thousand years.

Isolate, control and monitor

The environment needs to be protected from the radiation emitted from radioactive waste. This can be done by ensuring that these materials are effectively embedded in concrete (low- and medium-level waste) or in glass (high-level waste) and isolated from the environment. COVRA achieves this by storing the treated waste in specially designed buildings. All operations, including storage, are carefully controlled by COVRA and monitored by government inspectors and international organisations.
