Geological disposal

The method used by COVRA to store radioactive waste is a proven safe technology and is applied globally. Nonetheless, this storage method is not a final long-term solution. Even after 100 years of storage, part of this waste is still radioactive. This long-lived waste can best be disposed of in stable geological layers deep in the bedrock; we call this geological disposal. With our current state of science and technology, geological disposal is the only solution which ensures that this waste will remain outside of the living environment (biosphere) of humans even after thousands of years. Research on geological disposal is an integral part of the Dutch policy for radioactive waste. The coordination of this research is one of the core tasks of COVRA.
